UMF Announces Year-Long 150th Celebration
UMF is celebrating its historic 150th Anniversary with a year-long celebration of commemorative, academic and cultural events and exhibits. According to an article in The Maine Edge, the school was first established as the Western State Normal School by the Maine State Legislature on Oct. 9, 1863 and officially opened on Aug. 24, 1864. A highlight of the year’s events will be the celebration of Charter Day on Oct. 9, 2013 with a series of open to the public events. “Our continued success is a reflection of UMF’s educational excellence, resilience and enduring commitment to the liberal arts tradition,” said Kathryn A. Foster, UMF president. “We welcome the community to join us this year as we celebrate the ideals that the University was founded on 150 years ago and that continue today.” For more information on UMF’s 150th Anniversary Celebration and event details, please visit UMF’s sesquicentennial website at http://150.umf.maine.edu/.
